Brides in Books
Two of the best-known literary brides were dramatically stopped from saying I Do.
Jane Eyre was interrupted at the altar by a lawyer announcing that her broodingly sexy groom already had a wife. A mad one, a bit too keen on fire starting, who’d been living above her head in the attics for the last few months laughing scarily and who (really scarily) ripped poor Jane’s wedding veil in half in the dead of night. Definitely a downer.
And the hapless Miss Havisham … the clue’s in the ‘Miss’. Abandoned at the altar, she never got out of her lavish lace dress but sat endlessly at her wedding breakfast table, slowly decaying along with the cake.
Aren’t you glad you’re just normal?
We love Helena Bonham Carter! Looking gothic fabulous here as Miss Havisham in the new Great Expectations film. Directed by Mike Newell, it is currently being shot in the UK. Can't wait....
