Bags Of Yummy Loveliness

Novelty wedding favours too often resemble large Christmas cracker toys. Amusing and unusual – but destined for the dustbin. We think some of the best treats are those you can eat – and our roomy Fairtrade cotton pouches hold a generous helping!

So here’s our idea. We love the new-wave weddings that are less about putting on a flawless professional show, and more about getting everyone who loves the joyous couple to pitch in and contribute. Now - think upmarket farmer’s market, where you can pay over two quid for a slice of homemade gingerbread or a tiny packet of fudge. Then - ask someone like your lovely godmother to make a dozen trays of her yummy brownies instead of giving you a wedding present. Wrap generous slabs of it in cellophane and slip them into our adorable made-to-keep favour pouches. Or substitute tablet – easier to make than fudge, and less sticky!

Pure homemade luxury for your guests to devour with their coffee at the reception – with enough to take home for later.

Mother dearest has been making tablet since I can remember. It's simple to make, and although I'm sure it is pure evil on your teeth, it tastes like Heaven!! Fancy having a go? Perfect for Christmas too! Here's the recipe that my mum's been using since she was 10 years old... It also keeps for several weeks so it can be made well in advance. Enjoy!

What you'll need:

125 g unsalted butter

about 1 cup milk

1 kg caster sugar

1 tin (about 400 g) unsweetened condensed milk

few drops vanilla essence

What you'll do:

Using a large, heavy-bottomed pan, melt the butter in the milk. Add the sugar and slowly bring to the boil, stirring with a large wooden spoon. Then add the condensed milk, and boil gently for 20- 30 minutes, stirring all the time. When the mixture turns a lovely caramel colour, test for setting by dropping some on a cold plate. Take off the heat, beat in the vanilla essence quickly, then pour into a buttered baking tray (30 x 45 cm or thereabouts is good). Mark into squares when cool, and leave to set overnight.
